Within MGA’s portfolio are numerous renovation and adaptive re-use projects, for clients such as schools, museums, art centers and commercial institutions. For example, of the nine structures that MGA incorporated into the Newark Museum’s master plans and renovations, only one was originally designed for museum use; the others were office buildings, a YWCA, historic houses and carriage houses. The Paul Robeson Center for the Arts incorporated a former community center and office building, the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University occupied a former law school, and Three on the Bund in Shanghai was a beaux arts insurance company building transformed into an award winning, luxury arts and retail center. In each case, the spatial, climate-control and code requirements were carefully coordinated with the existing building, and a balance was struck between the often historic exterior character and the new internal use.
