Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States
The 5-star condominium hotel at 551 Fort Lauderdale Boulevard (A1A Highway) consists of a 24-story tower with 274 luxury guest suites and a five-story building with 24 additional units and a ground-floor restaurant and other tenant space. Each unit contains sleeping and living areas and a small kitchen, and is operated like a serviced apartment. The area, once the site of numerous small-scale motels, has been dramatically redeveloped with hotels and residential condominiums. When the project developers purchased the site, a zoning envelope had already been approved and therefore MGA and the architect-of-record Oscar Garcia worked within those parameters. MGA collaborated with Garcia on the conceptual design of the plans, massing, and facades and took primary responsibility for the interior design. The curve of the east facade, dictated by zoning, recalls the streamlined forms of early 20th century ocean liners, a reference to the hotel's oceanfront location, which is carried through in the interior design.
