Today, the hospitality world looks to the designers to deliver unique experiences and local connections. – Patrick Burke, AIA

“In my first hotel projects in the mid-1980’s (before the first boutique hotels happened) the hotel operators insisted that the hotel was a functional machine and that their brand was to be replicated worldwide for a consistent and recognizable brand experience much like McDonalds or Coca Cola. Design and local context was to take a back seat to the homogenous brand identity. We did interior designs for a Hyatt, a Sheraton, and a Westin in the mid 1980’s that pushed the boundaries of design freedom – and this was an unwelcome and difficult challenge for each of the operators. Today, the hospitality world looks to the designers to deliver unique experiences and local connections. Design has become one of the most important parts of the guest experience. Today we recognize that at the upper tiers of the hospitality industry guests are seeking unique experiences not uniformity in hospitality, and the industry has come a long way.” – Patrick Burke on the hospitality industry
