Creating identity and vitality in an aging district.
We joined several local and international architects to transform the underutilized de Resident district into a vibrant neighborhood of residences and office buildings. Our project gut renovated and re-clad a debilitated 19-story building from the 1950s for the Ministry of Health, Welfare & Sport. It is the most visible symbol of the renewal and a landmark in the city.
Humanistic scale.
While re-cladding an old building was the most obvious positive result, our two low-scaled annexes — one creating a courtyard and the other completing the street wall — activated public spaces for all users. Using traditional Dutch architecture elements helped us reconcile the small scale of low-rise housing with the new office towers and created a more humanistic and inviting neighborhood.
