Children’s Guild DC Public Charter School

Renovation, Adaptive Re-Use

The design team was hired by the Children’s Guild to design the new, LEED Certified, kindergarten through eighth grade Public Charter School for 550 students and a staff of 65. This is the fourth charter school for the Children’s Guild, and the first in Washington DC.

The owner’s vision was to provide a fun, unique experience for students through Transformation Education (TranZed) and real-world lessons. This educational building plays a large role in defining unique opportunities for learning and collaboration. This is an interior conversion of an existing 60,000 GSF business occupancy to educational occupancy, and includes selective demolition of interior non-load bearing walls, doors, the existing ceiling grid, light fixtures, finishes, doors, and some existing mechanical, electrical and plumbing components. The addition of several new windows, and upgrades to the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems were provided to accommodate the new educational use and bring the building into compliance with the applicable building and fire safety codes, ADA regulations and DC Green Building Act.
