The Hotel and Everything in It
Michael Graves, Hotel Michael’s namesake, impressed the clients for Resorts World Sentosa with his “design for all” attitude and the wide-ranging design interests he instilled in his architecture and design practices. Accepting their offer to design everything in Hotel Michael, he made sure that even the smallest details were the product of his hand or eye, down to the cabinet pulls and a signature font for the signage. He hand-drew patterns for textiles, designed built-in guestroom furniture and all the accessories, used his still-life paintings for wall-sized mosaics in the guest bathrooms, and painted murals for the lobby and ground floor corridor. The Palio Restaurant, featuring colorful banners from Siena’s famous horserace and large-scale prints of drawings he made in Rome in the 1960s, continues the fully Gravesian environment. A small retail store featuring Graves-designed products was installed in the hotel for its opening.
