Hyatt Regency Hotel & Office Building

Fukuoka, Japan

Articulating the Mix of Uses

Sited on a narrow infill lot between a public park and a service river, this award-winning mixed-use development is organized in four distinct volumes: the hotel forecourt flanked by guestrooms, a central rotunda where most of the hotel guestrooms and public functions are located, an office building, and a ballroom facing the river. The hotel lobby is lit from above through a dramatic pyramidal structure that can be viewed from the guestroom corridors encircling the rotunda. At the entrance to the office building’s sky-lit atrium, a grand stair within an iconic gold-leafed pavilion connects the levels and serves as a dramatic focal point for weddings, fashion shows and other photo opportunities.
