Lovely Lane United Methodist Church

Phased Rehabilitation

Lovely Lane United Methodist Church, is a c. l885 Romanesque-style church designed by renowned architect Stanford White. The design team’s work, since 1980, has included initial programming, master planning, phasing, cost estimating, and structural assessment programs, as well as construction documentation and administration for the execution of each restoration phase.

The scope of work included: cleaning and repointing of the granite and gneiss exterior; rehabilitation of all roofing and storm water drainage systems, including the restoration of the tower’s terra-cotta “fish scale” tile roofing and weather vane, as well as a new terra-cotta tile roofing system; restoration of all stained and painted art glass, including original Tiffany windows in the chapel and stairwells; planning and execution of accessibility for the physically challenged throughout the building; and restoration and updating of the building’s 1930 auditorium and gymnasium facilities. A central HVAC system was installed in the 1930’s addition, with future capacity for the remaining building spaces.

Most recently, restoration of the Main Sanctuary was completed that included replication of the fresco of the heavens on the sanctuary’s domed ceiling; restoring original paint and stained finishes; fabrication of new Wilton patterned carpeting to match the original; repair and restoration of the original theater style seating; new “atmospheric” and task lighting; and restoration of the original ventilation panel system.
