The NYCSCA commissioned Graves-MMA JV Architects to provide a renovation and addition to existing school building PS024Q in Flushing, Queens, New York, to serve a capacity of approximately 1200 students. The revised Program of Requirements (POR) provided by the SCA includes 46,390 SF of programmed area. The program for the new PS024Q will provide student support areas, cafeteria, science and tech labs, specialized instruction rooms in addition to elevator access to all floors.
Design features include four above-grade floors, 4 floors for instruction, and playroof on 5th floor (5270 SF), and an entry court for pick-up / drop-off and play area. A new entry and existing Robinson Street entry at the center of the building will reduce street wall and mass on Union Street. Common spaces (music, dance, art, science) are designed to be at the center of the L-shaped expansion plan which allows for both the common areas and classrooms to be open to more natural day lighting. Additionally, the mechanical and electrical spaces will be conveniently located adjacent to existing services in cellar.
